We must avoid certain common mistakes in the marketing of our company in order to optimize the resources dedicated to this purpose.

Marketing mistakes you should avoid

Many times we feel like we spend a fortune on marketing and get very little or nothing in return. This situation could make us feel frustrated and lead us to abandon our efforts. However, that could be a big mistake.

An effective marketing strategy can make the difference between success and failure for your organization. To optimize your strategy, there are some common mistakes that you should avoid at all costs.

Focus exclusively on data

Most marketers strongly believe in measurement as a fundamental tool. They continually monitor and measure various metrics in the hope that the data will show them how to improve customer interaction.

The problem is that some of the most important elements of customer interaction, such as emotional response, cannot be easily measured. How do we measure whether or not we are touching the heartstrings of our potential clients.

The true power of marketing lies in the synergy between the left hemisphere (data) and the right hemisphere (emotion). Focusing solely on data will never lead to optimal results.

Incorrectly defining our market niche

Many companies focus on broad market sectors and, in doing so, unnecessarily limit their future growth by hiding their true points of differentiation. Differentiation is important. We must discover our unique qualities and experiences and present them to those who can appreciate what we bring to the table. This will position you much better for sustained long-term growth.

Use digital marketing exclusively

It can be tempting to dismiss traditional marketing as outdated and focus solely on digital marketing. However, the market is saturated with digital tools, options and platforms, and they have generated so much noise that potential customers simply ignore most of them.

In a world inundated with digital ads, a billboard, print ad or poster can have a surprising impact. By doing things a little differently, you can differentiate yourself from your competition. If you only focus on digital, you could miss out on some great marketing opportunities that traditional media offers.

Conduct ineffective market research

When it comes to getting customer information, the quality of the conversation and dialogue matters much more than the quantity. Getting a few customers to talk, deeply and honestly, is much more useful than simply accumulating hundreds or thousands of superficial survey responses.

Focus on having a few rich and interesting conversations with people in your target audience. This will provide you with more meaningful and practical information. And, most likely, it will cost you much less than sending out hundreds of surveys.

Buy Likes and Followers

Many companies invest large amounts of money in buying "Likes" and followers. That is a big mistake, since there is no real interaction with the customer.

The problem with buying artificial likes and followers is that they don't really drive business. It can be exciting to see big numbers after your posts, but you're not creating real engagement.

Invest the money in generating deeper interaction with real customers and turning them into advocates for your brand. A handful of people with a positive view of your company are worth all the fake followers in the world.

Constant search for the latest marketing technology

If you're not making the most of your current marketing technology tools, chances are the newer tool won't work for you either. Many entrepreneurs jump from one tool to another, spending a lot of money in the process, hoping that one of them will do wonders.

If you invest time and money in learning the tool and training your employees, you will get the most out of your investment. We must be wary of hype about new tools and not get carried away with the idea that a fancy tool will replace good training and hard work.

Randomly engage in marketing actions

If you are not getting good results with your marketing efforts, you probably need better tactics and a strategy with a solid foundation and not constantly changing strategies.

You may be doing many things right, but if your tactics are executed without a well-thought-out and cohesive strategy, they can begin to counteract each other. When that happens, you end up with a bunch of random marketing actions.

They may look great separately, but together, they will generate a lower or even negative return on investment.

Focus exclusively on sentences that are too long

Many times companies use long phrases made up of keywords and with very specific terms to try to climb the search engine rankings. However, if the phrases are too long or complex, it is very unlikely that they will be searched by a potential client, which is not beneficial, regardless of the position they achieve in the ranking.

We must remember that the main objective is not to save money, but to generate income. This goal should guide your SEO plan. Therefore, you should consider using a combination of long phrases and common terms, striking the right balance between visibility and specificity.
